There were some recent issues (reported on LWN and other places) with
CentOS taking a long time to put out a release after a new RHEL
release, those might have had an effect. Most of the comments I saw
were pointing folks at Scientific Linux (a RHEL fork rather than
rebranding) rather than Debian though. I wonder if the difference
between now and then is statistically significant.

Personally I would consider it the same.
