This would work, and has no technical problems, but frankly, just
keeping the master DEP index (from which you get DEP numbers) in a
version control system, or in ikiwiki running on top of a version
control system, is easier, since it does not require writing new
software and setting up new infrastructure. Or require people to learn
new things.

I seem to be getting the vibe that that's where the consensus is going.
