It's also those same characteristics which elevate Debian above
operating systems which don't use Linux, such as NetBSD. So why not just
say '...that elevates Debian above all other operating systems.'?  It's
more accurate, and you avoid having to write either Linux or GNU/Linux. 
A win all around.
