the term free software implies that you are not paying anything. while that is true of open source software that is not the primary concern, in my opinion, it is that it is open for you to look at the source code and that implies that it is free. personally open is a better description then free. i guess it's really symantics but for me free software doesnt at all refer to software that you can study modify or redistribuite or even look at the source. just that you dont have to pay money for it (even software with banners is free!) but open implies that it's open to look at the source, do with what you want, and redistribuite.
