Sorry you had to wait until Jessie (which hopefully you are using) before
getting a response. Scanning bugs are not the easiest to deal with and we
are very dependent on HP responding with fixes to HPLIP.

jessie-backports has libsane-hpaio and libhpmud0. These are the only two
3.16.11 packages need for scanning with your device, I'd suggest you
install them (if necessary) and let us know how it goes with

  scanimage -L

to detect the scanner, and

  scanimage > scan.pnm

to test scanning.
