Bug#848164: cups-browsed: Please consider what HWResolution should be in an everywhere PPD

Package: cups-browsed
Version: 1.0.61-5+deb8u3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

I am not sure this is an issue to be corrected or one which is specific
to the printer. Hence the severity.

cups-browsed.conf has "CreateIPPPrinterQueues AppleRaster" uncommented,
so my AirPrint-enabled Envy 4502 uses rastertopwg and CUPS sends a
UNIRAST file to the printer.

 lp -d HP-ENVY-4500-series -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble -o cupsPrintQuality=Draft InsCert.pdf

produces a sheet of paper printed on both sides. Page 1 occupies the top
half of side 1. Page 2 occupies the bottom half of side 2. Both pages
are apparently evenly spread horizontally but compressed vertically.

The vertical squishing appears to be due to the line

 *cupsPrintQuality Draft/Draft: "<<HWResolution[300 150>>setpagedevice"

in the auto-generated PPD, but I am out of my depth here when it comes
to IPP specs.

If the line is altered to

  *cupsPrintQuality Draft/Draft: "<<HWResolution[150 150>>setpagedevice"

the printout fills both both sides of the paper and is undistorted. In
addition, the printing is less good than "Normal" quality; it is what I
would call "draft" and I'm happier with it.

Is this something which is worth changing?
