OK - done the init=/lib/sysvinit/init boot

No graphical interface - just a blank screen which accepts and echoscharactersSwitched Ctl-Alt-<F2>, logged in, "update" and "dist-upgrade" appearedto go through OKReboot as normal CUPS now appears to have been updated to 1.7.5 and testprints working.
