I have just tested on the other machine connecting via the parallel port. Once more the printer behaved correctly. I am still investigating. There is another bug on the parallel port machine: no ppds are found for the printer so I cannot "modify" it nor install it as a new printer. I doubt that this is related and I will eventually report that as a separate bug after further investigation. I have not yet given up on this mystery... ael
