I have just attempted to check the usb related aspects as requested. But the printer is no longer showing the problem :-( Unless that is some side effect from issuing cancel -a I can't account for that. Having closed this bug once after the printer seemed to be working, only to have to re-open after the fault re-appeared, I am not optimistic that this is a permanent cure. I will continue to investigate. ael
