Thanks.  What's odd is that I had LANG unset, which usually defaults to en,
especially for a California company like HP.  But set to the empty
string seems to make a difference.  Odd.

(Oops... I spoke too soon.  It worked when I just tried it again.
Maybe I had LANG set to something odd last time.)
