Package: lprng
Version: 3.8.9-1
Severity: important

On a system which sends its files to a print server for printing, the
completed jobs are not removed from the print queue, but rather
'saved'. Here is a sample output of 'lpq' after cleaning the print
queue manually, and then printing a single file (the listing has been
sanitized to hide hostnames and room numbers):

# lpq
Printer: oki@client 'Okipage 10ex in room 9999' (dest oki@server.xxxx.ttu.ee)
Queue: no printable jobs in queue
 Server: no server active
Status: job 'tt-debian@client+578' saved at 16:22:46.982
Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size
Time
done tt-debian@client+578 A 578 (STDIN) 30
16:22:46
Printer: oki@server 'Okipage 10ex in room 9999'
Queue: no printable jobs in queue
Status: job 'tt-debian@client+578' removed at 16:22:47.114

Here is the printcap file (has worked for ages under potato):

oki|lp|Okipage 10ex in room 9999
         :lp=
         :rm=server.xxxx.ttu.ee
         :rp=oki
         :sd=/var/spool/lpd/oki
         :mx#0
         :sh

lj|citius|HP Laserjet 5L in room 8888
         :lp=
         :rm=computer.xxxx.ttu.ee
         :rp=lj
         :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj
         :mx#0
         :sh

dj|deskjet|HP Deskjet 610C in room 7777
         :lp=
         :rm=computer.xxxx.ttu.ee
         :rp=dj
         :sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj
         :mx#0
         :sh

The print server is running potato (lprng 3.6.12-8) and has not been
recently reconfigured. Another client runs an older woody with lprng
3.7.4-5 and does not exhibit this problem. There are no more woody
hosts around to test.

The main associated risk is that the disk (partition) containing /var
can fill up, stopping logging, mail delivery, etc. Therefore I have
set an 'important' flag on this.
