For what it's worth, I've just installed 138 and initially a window appeared but I couldn't interact with any menus or do anything. But after removing .mozilla I was able to get it working. Based on this, it seems clearing that directory is required.
That's what I found as well. I recall I found a way to reset profile and then it worked. The only obvious flaw is a random looking blue rectangle appearing over tabs. If you are patient speedtest.net can actually work. What I don't understand is why the profile needs removing or resetting since I installed it on a fairly fresh Debian install with a default FireFox installed. But, given the FireFox I had before crashed on startup, may have corrupted the default profile.
Also, as a bonus, if you still have an older Linux like Ubuntu Xenial you still like using you can run the latest FireFox! :-P It's not too hard. So all you need to do is mount your modern Debian Linux or compatible. Do a chroot to it from terminal. And run firefox as your user from sudo or logging in. Doesn't need any settings for X and amazingly opens up a window right on your desktop. One caveat is downloads will go to the mounted volume. But if you have a shared home setup it will make it easier. It's possible it could be automated with a nice desktop icon and script or even package, but I was to lazy to do that yet. :-D
