They can use manual partitioning which they would have to use anyway
when preserving individual partitions. There is no difference in this
regard as compared to previous partman-auto recipes.

As I said before, this for the default installation and partitioning
scheme. If you would like to shoot yourself into the foot, you're,
of course, still free to do that.

You should never assume that not having a backup is safe when performing
maintenance work like reinstallation of the whole system.
