As for the DNS, do not edit /etc/resovl.conf as that is system

It should not be. At all. However I think I have this fixed now :

charon$ pwd

charon$ /usr/bin/time -p wget https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-012 converted 'https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-012' (ANSI_X3.4-1968) -> 'https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-012' (UTF-8) --2017-02-05 00:44:26-- https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-4.4-patches/bash44-012

So previously that would take four minutes while the ipv6 dns data
 failed over and over.

I modified /etc/sysctl.conf also :

charon$ grep -v "^#" /etc/sysctl.conf | grep -v "^$"
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.eth0.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.send_redirects = 0
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 0

That seems to have settled down the situation.

yay ... I can finally fetch kernel sources and try a build.

Thank you for your insights and input and just plain patience.
