brilliant!!! I did
Linux "video=radeonfb:1920x1200-32@60"
and now I have a GUI! I did however see a brief window (it disappeared quickly) about GNOME3 failing to load. But I definitely have a graphical interface now! So much better, thank you!
Remaining questions:
1) how do I make this "video=..." a default option so that I don't have to type it each time?
2) what's up with this GNOME3 failure - how do I find out what happened and what's wrong?
