install on MacPro G5 PPC gives black screen with white cursor - how to set up graphics?

I just installed, from a CD, Debian onto an Apple Mac Pro PPC G5. Installation went with no errors (I'm running Linux G5Debian 3.2.0-4-powerpc64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.63-2+deb7u1 ppc64), but upon first boot, I see a black screen and a white arrow cursor that moves when I move my mouse. I assume it's a videocard thing.

lspci gives

0001:06:03.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)
0000:f0:10.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]

plugging in the monitor into the DVI port gives a black screen; using the VGA port gives a white screen on which even the text shell output can't be seen.

and, while the system has an /etc/X11 directory, there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf (which I understand from my readings might have video card info in it).

I've tried xorg.conf files from mac.linux.be like the g5_1.txt and radeon1.txt and with either one, the X server won't start (ps -A | grep X shows nothing and no cursor arrow appears on monitor). When I delete the xorg.conf, it appears to start (but shows only blank screen).

What should I have in my xorg.conf to make the graphics work?
