Until now I have solved this by adding a suitable xorg.conf with:
HorizSync 58-62
VertRefresh 75-117
in Monitor Section, but if /etc/X11 is missing... perhaps you can try
to create it.

On my iMac G3, I have installed MintPPC 9, which is built on top of
Squeeze, and it installs automatically a working xorg.conf:
http://mac.linux.be/files/xorg/imac7.txt.
