When you enter Open Firmware (with the external CD drive attached) type devalias and look for ud in the list of devices. If ud is in the list use "boot ud:,/install/yaboot". If ud is not listed this will obviously not work for you.
I used this to successfully install from a USB CD drive on a G5 iMac with a broken internal SuperDrive.
