but recall that the behavior pre-existed the alsa drivers installed 
via download make and make install.

i was hoping that my problems corresponded to problems others reported with the alsa drivers on ppc so that installing the latest drivers, done on tuesday or wednesday last, was supposed to fix, but did not change the sysystem behavior at all... same weird sound no music :(
