What is the reason for using a distribution instead of building anything
yourself?

NetBSD is not supported with Debian. And NetBSD actually supports less
cpu architectures then Linux.

Ubuntu != Debian.

No, most embedded devices use ARM or MIPS cpus in the meantime.
