I personally had a G4 iBook than ran without pbbuttonsd :
- cpu throttling, hard-disk power save mode and the like are handled by
laptop-mode (standard on x86 laptops)
- backlight dimming is handled by gnome
- "function" keys are very well handled by xorg & gnome
- suspend to ram is handled by gnome-power-manager

What else do you need ?
