I have and old powerbook g4 500MHz, unfortunately I can't get the temperature reading since this does not support it. Anyways, from reading your post you are comparing two totally different architectures (G3 vs G4). From my understanding the G4 definitely runs hotter than the old G3s.

I don't think it is anything to worry about. But again I could be wrong, so it would be interesting to find out if it was some other issue.
