I know that my firewire/usb harddisk worked in the past using ohci1394
and sbp2. I did not try with the latest kernel. What errors do you get?
I also had my iPod working with firewire.

I don't rember the exact kernel version. But I would be quite surprised
if it did not work with the latest version. But as said I did not try
recently.
