Hi Gustav,
It may be related to this problem: http://wiki.debian.org/iMacG5 (scroll down to "Minor Font Fix" section) It's not a problem with your font rendering, as far as I can tell, but just with the specific rendering of Helvetica on specific sites that force its use.
And yeah, it's not powerpc specific.
