OK, here is what I have:

#the loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

/etc/network/interfaces is not a script nor any other executable, it's just a
config file. You should rather do:

cat /etc/network/interfaces
