Re: RAM for iBook

one of them *might* work, maybe. that book only
takes one.

official specs are here:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G3/ibook15Oct01/0_Preface/index.html

(i just pulled this off wikipedia, but i did go there and look,
it looks pretty obscure to me, but maybe if i had the
chip in hand it would be easier)

in general i think 256mb is more generous for sarge,
depends on what you do, but it is not like macos. my
old powerbook only has 80MB and it works, my desktop
g3 has 192MB and i think that is enough probably.

the first chip looked better to me. but i am not sure about
the ibook special requirement is if any, especially not
that model.

hmmm, looking at the specs again. it comes with 128 and
that should get you started; also the 600Mhz model, having
a 50% faster system bus is going to be more picky/demanding
about memory, but the sticking point is the special requirements.

my advice is to go ahead and put sarge on and *then*
try the xtra RAM, if you decide to try it. when you install
allow 256-384 MB for the swap (virtual memory). if you decide
not to try it, then pay for memory that comes from a real
mac supplier - that knows it works.

i have heard that linux is more forgiving than macosX.
also there is a memory test utility, i think it is on the
mac-on-linux development site somewhere. (dimm first aid).

good luck !

hi list:

I hope this is not off-topic.

My girlfriend's Fujitsu Lifebook broke (North Bridge burned) so I'm
now in posess of the two 256 M RAM chips. I'm wondering if they'll run
on an iBook G3 (late 2001) with Debian Sarge?

I've heard that some Apple laptops are very picky about RAMs, and
incompatible RAMs have the potential of messing the whole machine up.
So here are some high-resolution photos I took of the RAMs:

If anyone on the list would be kind enough to take a look, I would be
very much appreciated.

regards,

Lawrence
