PowerBook G4 17" weirdness

Hi list,

slightly off-topic:

something odd happened to me today after installing the latest OsX
security update: after the mandatory reboot, the backlight of my PB would
only shortly flash on, then immediately turn off while in OF (regardless
of whether I booted into the OF console, into the yaboot menu, or straight
into MacOS after zapping the PRAM). fblevel in linux wouldn't change
anything either.

The only thing that helped was attaching an external monitor via the
DDI/VGA connector and rebooting.

Any explanations?
