In the first case, it is going to try the filesystem type specified
in /etc/fstab for that device. Check to see if you have the right
type there. Mine has this:

/dev/hda        /media/cdrom0   iso9660 ro,user,noauto  0       0

The type is the third field (iso9660). This is the default under sarge,
so I expect yours is similar.
