2.4 Kernel Compilation on Powermac 6500/225
Please cc me on any response to this posting as I am not subscribed to
the list.
I guess this is more of a kernel question than a Debian question, so I
apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum in which to ask it. I
have a Powermac 6500/225 with the following hardware modifications:
* Replaced the internal hard drive with a Maxtor 40 gig
* Added a 2-port USB hub in one of the PCI slots
* Added a RealTek ethernet card in the other PCI slot
* Replaced the hardware modem with another ethernet card
* Upgraded to 96 megs of RAM
I used to have Debian woody installed and running with a 2.4 kernel. I
recently reformatted the hard drive and did a clean install of woody
<shame>without backing up my kernel config file.</shame>
Now, for the life of me, I can't get a 2.4 kernel to compile and boot!
When I'm lucky enough to happen upon a set of config options that
actually compile (which is astoundingly infrequently!), I generally get
a message at boot from VFS saying it can't find the root device. At
first I thought I was missing a necessary IDE or SCSI driver, but the
partition check always completes successfully. Wouldn't the partition
check fail if it was missing the appropriate driver?
I know it's not my quik settings because when I boot the default image
from the Debian install with the same quik settings, it comes up fine.
The partition contains an ext2 file system, and I'm compiling ext2
support in when I build the kernel.
So, if you have any idea what's going wrong here, please let me know.
But what I'd really like is for somebody out there with a 2.4 kernel
working on their Powermac 6500 (it doesn't have to be a 225) to email me
their config file.
