Booting my G3 (again)

I cannot get my beige G3 to boot off the hard disk (I am able to boot it off a
floppy, but that confines me to the 2.2 kernel on the floppy and is far from
sattisfactory)

The setup fails to make the disk bootable because ofpath cannot hack my scsi
device (sym53c8xx)

I have installed a patched quik and the boot device is meant to be /dev/sda2
(is it a problem if it is not the first partition on the disk).

The relevant of settings I am using are:

boot-device scsi/sd@0:1  (NB I have tried others)

boot-file /boot/vmlinux root=/dev/sda2

The command line for the floppy based kernel reported by proc is
adb_buttons=103,111 root=/dev/sda2 video=atyfb:vmode:6

cat /proc/cpuinfo reports, inter alia

revision 2.2

motherboard APPL,Gossamer MacRISC

Is there anything I am doing that is wrong? Do I need to apply OF patches and
if so is there any way I can apply those from 'nix as I have no Mac OS
available.

Adrian
