yeah macs dont have the analog sound cable, which
is good and bad. good because you dont get interferance
but bad because your cd doesnt just do all the work.

you can get xmms to play audio cds on powerpc
by firing up xmms, right clicking on xmms
options -> preferences then select the audio cd
plugin from the input plugins list, click configure
then set from analog to digital

there is a built in cd audio plugin and different
cd audio plugin in the package trees (late, cant
remember proper name). but it didnt seem to be
anymore usefull, stable or features than the default
xmms one.

i would say that digital playback is technically better
than analog. but thats beyond the scope of this forum
