I went through the same thing on my TiBook IV, until I found out that
more recent packages for pbbuttonsd (and gtkpbbuttons) are available
from Stefano Zacchiroli's site http://www.bononia.it/~zack/

Install pmud, then add these to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

# Zack's current pbbuttons packages
deb http://www.bononia.it/~zack/ debian/
deb-src http://www.bononia.it/~zack/ debian/

then apt-get install pbbuttonsd, it will remove pmud.  Currently, I am
running unstable with pbbuttonsd 0.5.10-1 and gtkpbbuttons 0.6.2
