Kernel compile errors - g3 wallstreet 2.6.8 kernel

I have a g3 wallstreet 266mhz and trying to compile my own 2.6.8
kernel i recieve the following:

include/linux/kdev_t.h: In function `old_decode_dev':
include/linux/kdev_t.h:34: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault

make: *** [mm] Error 2

however im recieving other errors during the compile that crashes the
make, wondering if it is possibly a broken gcc? (ive uninstalled and
reinstall) or perhaps a bus error? any help appreciated.
