I don't remember - it's been a really long time since I last had to do a
basic installation.  People can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you
can do a very minimal install (of the "Base System") without having to go
through Tasksel or selecting packages.

Take a look in /etc/apt.  I'm not at my Debian machine anymore, and won't
be till next week, but there should be a file in there called
sources.list.  Edit this file and change instances of "stable" in that
file to "testing"  After this, you should run "apt-get update" so that
your packing list and dependencies are for "testing" and then "apt-get
upgrade" to actually upgrade the software packages.  Then, you will be
able to "apt-get install ...." packages you want.
