I  had to chuckle to my self, I was looking for sd(x) for the device and
totally over looked the sr0.  

I got the drive to read cdroms but under gnome nautilus it does not
reconize the device to write.  The dmesg says:

        scsi1 : SCSI emulation for IEEE-1394 SBP-2 Devices
        sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

/dev shows
