apt problem after debian-installer install

Hi folks.. after a hiatus, I'm back to powerpc (just got a new PB G4 12" 1.33GHz) and hence debian. I installed using the debian-installer netinst CD for sarge.. install had a couple problems with the bootstrap partition etc. but after solving that I now have a working installation.. except for apt. I tried a few http sources but apt is unable to update the package list. I can ping the server just fine but while trying to update the package list, I get an error saying it can't connect to the server. My source file currently has just one line:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free

(I've hand-edited the above so please excuse any typos)

Please let me know how I can get apt to work..Appreciate the help.

Thanks,
nirmal
