I don't know why people keep using that funny
and complicated notation for chmod. The command
takes octal. Do this:

chmod 666 /dev/cdrom
ls -l /dev/cdrom

Then, if /dev/cdrom is a symlink, follow with
an "ls -l" for whatever that points to.
