$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda

You basically just make a partition of type 41, then you dd your
kernel into it. On my PReP box I usually just do...
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1
dd if=/usr/src/linux/arch/ppc/boot/images/zImage.prep of=/dev/sda1
to install a new kernel,
