cannot mount /dev/cdrom

hi all,
i have a beige g3/266. before i had a 2 gig scsi + 4 gig ide on this machine. i managed to install debian (30r1) as only os on this machine. few days ago i got a 18 gig scsi ibm and i tried to get rid of the old 2 gig scsi and 4 gig ide and have just this 18 gig scsi ibm hard on this machine. went through all phases of instal and when i tryied to copy  'quik' (first.b) from a cd  i can do 'umount /dev/cdrom' and take out the debian ppc cd1 that was on the cdrom , but when i insert the cd with patched and try to mount ' mount /dev/cdrom ' it tells me that '/dev/cdrom cannot be found in fstab' i open with nano-tiny fstab and cdrom is there listed . any ideas? ( first time i installed with the old 2gig scsi hard i had the same problem with the floppy and i tried with the cd, then worked).
many thanks, _adrian_
