FYI The 170 is a 64-bit Power3 CHRP machine. These support the ppc32 and ppc64 kernels, but the 32-bit kernel requires CONFIG_POWER3. I know how to make a bootable CD that boots on PReP and CHRP; it would be nice if Debian could support that at some point.
