You shouldn't have to.

How do you put the machine to sleep? (snooze -f circumvents pmud)

Does /etc/init.d/pmud-utils status work? (is pmud-utils installed?)

Any interesting lines from pmud in the syslog? (maybe add some debugging
output to pwrctl-local)
