No, the HFS filesystem itself is limited to 2 GB. HFS+, on the other
hand (which MacOS will call something like "extended HFS"), is a newer,
improved version of the HFS filesystem that can support larger
filesystems, but isn't compatible with the 'hfs' filesystem in the
kernel. The 'hfsplus' package will let you read (and now write, also, I
believe?) HFS+ filesystems, similarly to how mtools works for MS-DOS
filesystems.
