You'll still have the 128x48 (or whatever the dimensions are) text mode.
You need to install the fbset utility, which you can use to switch the
resolution (it applies to individual VCs). Or you can pass options to
the kernel at boot time to specify a lower display resolution (640x480
will get you an 80x30 console).
