keyboard!#%^&

Hi (again) everybody. I am (again) in need of
some assistance.

I have been trying to boot a new kernel (I?ve
tried both a 2.4 and a 2.6) off CD while pointing
it at my installed (by potato-2.2.17) root
filesystem (on a G4). It boots up OK, with two
(fairly problematical) exceptions. One, it is
unable to startx successfully (although it tries)
and two, it is entirely mismapping the keyboard
(which gets a little tricky). This despite the fact
that the boot messages show it seeing the
correct (I believe) keyboard (Apple extended).
Also, when I run startx manually, it gives the
message: ?fatal server error: cannot open
mouse (no such device): although the boot
messages show the right mouse.
I?m not sure if this is enough information, but
does anyone have any suggestions on how to
solve this one?

Thanks,

Mike

P.S: I have found some similar references on
the archives for this, but no clear answer. If
there is an answer there and someone could
point me at it, that would be great.
