Yes, but you didn't tell us you are running 4.3, you only mentioned
unstable, so I assumed you were running 4.2.
The DRI locking up on server startup is likely a configuration issue
related to AGP then.
You may also want to try my dri-trunk-sid packages for current DRI code.

Sounds like it could be related to heat?

Hmm. This looks similar to an intermittent problem with the Radeon 7200
in my girlfriend's Cube, where radeonfb doesn't always initialize the
palette registers correctly (I assume the effect doesn't get captured on
screenshots taken directly from the iBook?). Does any of the following
have an effect?
* running at a different depth
* switching to console and back to X (possibly repeatedly)
* not using Option "UseFBDev" (unlikely to work with 4.3 though)
