ibook2 600mhz X-4.3.0 (dri trunk): which driver?

good day,

ibook2 600mhz debian unstable with the daenzer dri debs. X is 4.3.0 DRI
trunk.

modules loaded are r128 and the sound, airport, etc.

XF86Config-4 has

Driver	"ati"
BusID	"PCI:0:16:0"
VideoRam	"16000"
#yeah, i kow thats not exact
Option	"UseFBDev"	"true"

when X starts the bg doesn't get set, the color scheme is out of wack and
greenish, and the mouse pointer is blocky and white.

i have recently replaced the HD on this ibook due to failure, and after
running quite smoothly for 1.5 years i know need X back up. i don't remember
what to comment out or change.

kernels tried are two debian kernel images: vmlinux-2.4.18-newpmac and
vmlinux-2.4.21-powerpc, and the benh_kernel: 2.4.22-ben2.

when using the benh kernel, r128 is not loaded but agpgart is. when trying X
with benh the XFree86.0.log has

(EE) R128(0): FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument. i have tried drivers in
XF86Config-4 of r128, ati, and fbdev.

please point me in the correct direction.

appreciated,

ken
