I've got a similar problem on my TiBook. When the signal isn't very
strong, I get dropouts all the time. Like, two meters from the base it's
OK all the time, but when I'm one floor below, it changes between 'still
OK' and below noise... I'm not entirely sure it is not an electrical
problem with the internal Airport/antenna cabling.

Although, the problems started after a firmware upgrade quite some time
ago (6 month?), and never stopped since (although the firmware has been
further upgraded since...).

IIRC, I have the same problem in OS X. But I'd need to re-check.
