Hmmm, once upon a time, I used XFree (can't remember which version) with
an S3 Trio in a PMC module on an MVME2600. 

The only serious problem was the initizalition of the hardware at boot
time, that's why I wrote a bootloader which includes a BIOS ROM emulator.
