The sound chip in the powerbook is controlled through the i2c bus.  I2c
is very easy to interface to and there are plenty of i2c temp sensors. 
Because the bus is basically power + 2 wires you should be able to
retro-fit one quite easily, if you can find where the i2c bus goes.

There are many other interesting devices one could control from i2c, do
a google search and you'll be amazed :)
