I'm quite aware that several people run linuxppc on Amiga and IBM hardware.
However, judging by the flood of posts from various PowerBook and iMac users
lately, I'm starting to think that pre-compiled kernels for those hardware
configuration would be a time-saver for many users.
Some of us have started doing that on PA-RISC, lately. While I am not aware of
packages targetted for specific HP hardware having entered Debian/HPPA, there
are kernel configs for several common hardware variants on the parisclinux site.
For instance, one very common PA-RISC box, the Series 9000 model 712, was made
in such huge quantities that many people end up getting themselves one for as
low as 50eur and show up on the debian-hppa list asking for where to start. My
kernel-config-2.4.19-hp712 has helpped several people get to where they want in
very little time with their new toy, which is nice.
On PPC, I've been trying to compile my own iMac kernel, but haven't been able to
produce a kernel whose sound support works. I've tried patching the kernel with
kernel-patch-(version)-powerpc, which did not work cleanly, and then using ALSA
drivers, which compiled fine but failed to load the modules. I've noticed that
my self-compiled kernel-image-2.4.20-imac is MUCH faster than the 2.4.18-bf2.4
used in the Woody installer, as well as faster than kernel-image-2.4.20-powerpc,
but since sound support does not work, I've reverted to using the later.
